Title: Coffee, Confession, and Ketchup
Posted on: August 27, 2026
The terrace at Cafรฉ Algarves is doing what it always does in late afternoon: turning ordinary espresso into something that feels like a secret. White-and-blue tiles catch the light. The ocean sits just beyond the railing. Three cups of bica steam between them.

Johnny leans back in his chair, stirring nothing.
Johnny: Iโm just saying the galรฃo here is better than half the places in Vancouver. They donโt drown it. They let the coffee speak.
Nelly: Thatโs because they still treat coffee like a conversation, not a delivery. You sit. You talk. You donโt walk away with a lid on it.
Joe hasnโt said much yet. Heโs been watching the small plate in the middle of the table โ baked cod, golden on top, a neat red smear of ketchup on the side.
Joe: You still do that.
Nelly: Do what?
Joe: The ketchup. On bacalhau. Everyone else acts like itโs a crime against Portugal. You justโฆ do it.
Nelly smiles, unbothered, and dips a flake of fish.
Nelly: It needs the sweetness. The vinegar. People get precious about tradition until theyโre actually hungry.
Johnny laughs.
Johnny: Sheโs got a point. Half the โrulesโ around here are just someone elseโs grandmother winning an argument in 1972.
Joe looks at her the way he always does when the cafรฉ gets quiet enough.
Joe: Iโve never loved a woman as much as you.
Nelly doesnโt look away. She sets the fork down.
Nelly: Thatโs a big sentence to drop between a bica and a plate of fish, Joe.
Joe: I know. Iโve had years to practice smaller ones. They never fit.
Johnny glances between them, then very carefully studies his cup.
Johnny: Iโm going to need another coffee for this part.
Nelly: (soft) You always did say the quiet things like they were weather.
Joe: Theyโre not weather. Theyโre the only true thing Iโve got. Everything else is noise. The only imperfection I can find is the ketchup. And even thatโฆ I like it. It means youโre not performing Portugal for anyone. Youโre just you.
Nellyโs laugh is small and real.
Nelly: So my great flaw is condiment choice.
Joe: Thatโs the whole list.
Johnny raises his cup.
Johnny: To ketchup on baked cod, then. And to people who say the thing instead of waiting another ten years.
They tap the little white cups together. The ocean keeps doing what it does. Inside Cafรฉ Algarves, nobody is in a hurry.
Nelly: Stay for one more. The next oneโs on me.
Joe: Iโll stay.
Johnny: Obviously. Someone has to make sure you two donโt turn this into a fado.
Comments open. Have you ever confessed something important over coffee? Keep it kind.
Knowing is half the battle.
